To get started with this blank [[TiddlyWiki]], you'll need to modify the following tiddlers:
* [[SiteTitle]] & [[SiteSubtitle]]: The title and subtitle of the site, as shown above (after saving, they will also appear in the browser title bar)
* [[MainMenu]]: The menu (usually on the left)
* [[DefaultTiddlers]]: Contains the names of the tiddlers that you want to appear when the TiddlyWiki is opened

!To check whether you have java installed:
*Open up windows explorer, and look for this directory {{{C:\Program Files\Java}}}. If you don't have this directory, then you probably don't have Java installed. If this directory does contain one or more subdirectories, such as {{{C:\
Program Files\Java\jre6}}}, or {{{C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.x}}} etc, then you do have java installed.
*If you don't have java installed, you can download it from http://java.com/en/
!To check whether you have java available on your path
*Open up a command prompt. (~WindowsKey-R, type in cmd, press enter).
*Type in {{{java -version}}}.
*If you see //'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.// then Java is not on your path. Follow the instructions under the next heading.
*If you see //java version// followed by a number such as //java version "1.6.0_12"// then java is available on your path, and you are right to go.
!Making java available on your classpath
*Select Start -> Computer -> Properties -> Advanced system settings -> Environment Variables -> System variables -> PATH.

NOTE, in Windows XP, after setting the path, you will need to restart Windows for it to become available. This is very annoying, but necessary. I'm not sure about Vista, it could well be the same. After setting your path variable, run the test above under the heading //

Open up {{{tiddle/tiddle.properties}}}. Modify the {{{hotkey.combinations.show}}} property. The format of a hotkey combination is {{{<MODIFIER(S)>+<KEY>}}}, where valid modifiers are CTRL, SHIFT, ALT and/or WIN.

To get started with this blank [[TiddlyWiki::test]], you'll need to modify the following tiddlers:
* [[SiteTitle]] & [[SiteSubtitle]]: The title and subtitle of the site, as shown above (after saving, they will also appear in the browser title bar)
* [[MainMenu]]: The menu (usually on the left)
* [[DefaultTiddlers]]: Contains the names of the tiddlers that you want to appear when the TiddlyWiki is opened

To run Tiddle without a DOS window you will need to create a shortcut which directly calls javaw.exe in your java installation directory.
Right click on your quick-launch bar/desktop/start menu, Create shortcut. The properties of the shortcut should look something like this. (Please change paths to suit your Java/Tiddle installations):

*Be sure to include quotes (") around your java path if it contains spaces.
*Be sure to include the full path to your java installation. Windows has a nasty habit of inserting strange java paths if you don't specify the full path.
*Be sure to set the "Start in" property. This is required so that Tiddle can find the properties file it needs.
!What is Tiddle
Tiddle is a tool for accessing "snippets" of information in a fast convenient manner on your PC.
Tiddle runs hidden in the background on your PC. When activated using Windows-a (or other assigned hotkey), Tiddle floats on top of your other windows allowing you to quick search through your snippets of information. Once you have found your snippet, you can quickly hide Tiddle by hitting the escape key, or you can copy all or part of the snippet using the various Tiddle hot keys.
Data for Tiddle is stored in one or more [[TiddlyWikis|http://www.tiddlywiki.com/]].

!What is ~TiddlyWiki
[[TiddlyWiki|http://www.tiddlywiki.com/]] is a single html file which has all the characteristics of a wiki - including all of the content, the functionality (including editing, saving, tagging and searching) and the style sheet. Because it's a single file, it's very portable - you can email it, put it on a web server or share it via a USB stick.

But it's not just a wiki! It has very powerful plugin capabilities, so it can also be used to build new tools. You have full control over how it looks and behaves. For example, ~TiddlyWiki is already being used as:
*A personal notebook
*A GTD ("Getting Things Done") productivity tool
*A collaboration tool
*For building websites (this site is a [[TiddlyWiki|http://www.tiddlywiki.com/]] file!)
*For rapid prototyping
*...and much more!

Anyway, back to Tiddle. To install Tiddle:
!Download and install
*Download the Tiddle distribution from [[Tiddle Sourceforge page|https://sourceforge.net/projects/tiddle]].
*Unzip archive to a folder on your pc (I'll reference this folder from now on as tiddle-dir)
*Ensure you have Java installed on your pc, and that the Java bin directory is on your path. If you are unsure, follow the instructions posted here [[Checking whether you have java installed]]
!Point Tiddle at your ~TiddlyWiki file(s)
*Edit the tiddle-dir/tiddle.properties file and set the {{{wiki.url}}} property to point to your ~TiddlyWiki.
*This can be relative to the tiddle-dir directory, e.g.{{{wiki.url=./my-wiki.html}}}, or it can be an absolute URL, e.g. {{{wiki.url=file:///C:/dev/wiki/wiki.html}}}.
*It can also be a reference to a directory on your PC, e.g. {{{wiki.url=file:///C:/dev/my/wikis}}} or {{{wiki.url=C:/dev/my/wikis}}}. If referencing a directory Tiddle will search recursively and index all ~TiddlyWikis in the directory specified.
*You can also specify multiple locations my separating locations with a semicolon. e.g. {{{wiki.url=file:///C:/dev/wiki/wiki.html;C:/dev/my/wikis}}}. When specifying multiple ~TiddlyWiki files, Tiddle with color code search results assigning a different color for snippets from each ~TiddlyWiki file.

*Run Tiddle by running tiddle-dir/tiddle.bat.
*Note, you might find it easier to launch tiddle, by creating a shortcut on your desktop, or quicklaunch bar. To run Tiddle without a dos window being displayed, follow the instructions in this section:[[Running Tiddle without a dos window]]
!Support for Mac/Linux
Theoretically Tiddle should be fine running on Mac/Linux, as both OS's support Java. However the library I am using to capture hotkeys is Windows specific. So if you don't mind not being able to hide/show Tiddle and are happy just to minimize it like you would any other app, then Tiddle should work just fine. But... I haven't tested it. So if anyone is willing to test it, and get back to me, I'm happy to make any changes required to get it going. Also, if anyone is willing to provide code which will capture OS hotkeys for Mac/Linux, and are happy to be my tester for that OS, I'm willing to integrate such code into the Tiddle codebase.
Tiddle is designed to work primarily with the keyboard (rather than the mouse). The idea is that you should be able to access Tiddle totally with the keyboard, without distracting from your "real" work.
